Fred Wolseley: A Man of Many Parts (book) by Ian Itter

Ian has kindly offered to donate 30% of the $70.00 cover price to our restoration project.

Frederick York Wolseley is known for inventing the first successful sheep shearing machine, a design still used today. Over a period of twenty years, while living as a squatter and pastoralist, Wolseley worked on developing his machine, progressing from a rotary mechanism to the scissor-action hand piece. The development of the hand piece involved multiple stages, overcoming challenges in design, manufacturing, and long travel distances. As machine shearing gained popularity, pastoralists adopted the new method, leading to the construction of large shearing sheds, with one of the first successful uses of the machine at Toganmain Station in the Riverina. This book details Wolseley’s life as an inventor, squatter, pastoralist, and industrialist in Australia.

Jim Davidson – The Man and the Industry, Revisited (book) by Ian Itter

Every Australian — and anyone connected to what was once our nation’s greatest industry, sheep and wool — owes a debt to Jim Davidson.

In the pioneering days of mechanical shearing, Davidson rode his bicycle through the bush, lugging with him everything needed to demonstrate a new technology: the shearing machine. At a time when many places barely had roads, his determination and bushcraft helped change the face of Australian agriculture.

Working alongside names like Fred Wolseley, John Howard, Dangar, Gedye & Co., and R. A. Lister, Davidson played a pivotal role in transforming shearing practices and improving life on the land.

This book is a tribute to an unsung hero whose contributions helped build an industry and a way of life. As one seasoned shearer put it:

Robert Savage, Victorian Pioneer: A Collection (book) by Ian Itter

Ian has kindly offered to donate 30% of the $40.00 cover price to our restoration project.

Robert Savage arrived in Hobart in 1843 and soon sailed across Bass Strait with the pioneering Henty family, bringing sheep to settle land alongside the well-known pastoralist H.P. Dana.

A prolific writer and keen observer of his time, Savage recorded early encounters with the local Aboriginal people and contributed frequently to newspapers of the day. His thoughtful commentary earned him the role of Agricultural Editor at The Argus newspaper in Melbourne, where he penned many respected editorials on contemporary rural and agricultural issues.

Savage also played a key part in Australia’s mechanical innovation. Working closely with Frederick York Wolseley, he co-developed and patented several agricultural inventions, including the first mechanical shearing handpiece in Australia.

Even after parting ways with Wolseley, Savage continued his inventive pursuits. He designed a torpedo intended to protect Melbourne’s gold ships and created two models of Earth Scoops — both of which still survive today at Walgett, NSW.

This book offers a fascinating, though incomplete, window into the life and legacy of a remarkable settler and innovator. It will appeal to anyone interested in Australia’s rural history, early journalism, and mechanical ingenuity.

The Shearers (book) by Andrew Chapman.

Andrew has kindly offered to donate 30% of the $60.00 cover price to our restoration project.

For thirty years, Andrew Chapman has travelled through the backblocks of Australia to photograph the big shearing sheds and the assorted characters that inhabit them.

Originally, it was his way of recording a way of life that seemed destined to disappear. When he started, there were predictions that robotic shearing would take the place of the grinding hard work in the sheds. Shearing says Andrew, is “the hardest physical work you can see anywhere in Australia

However, fifty years on, the great properties are still there, and their magnificent sheds are still humming with human activity. With only a few concessions to modern ways, the sheds and their shearers continue to work as a kind of living testaments to times past.

While international economic forces may be behind the reduction of the national sheep flock, technological advances have had little impact on the work within the sheds; and so the way of life continues.

While attempting to capture a world he thought was disappearing, Andrew has beautifully captured a living record of a way of life that continues to persevere.
